Born on December 4, 1930. Transferred to the University of Alaska while enrolled in graduate school at Tohoku University, where he became a professor at the University of Alaska Geophysical Institute in 1964 and its director in 1986. He later became director of the International Arctic Research Center. Known worldwide for his research on the aurora. Received the Japan Academy Prize in 1977 for his research on magnetospheric disturbances. Born in Nagano Prefecture. Graduated from Tohoku University.
