A machine that applies ink to a plate and presses it against paper to produce a print. Its basic mechanisms include a pressure mechanism, a device that applies ink to the plate, a device that moves the paper, and a device that controls the movement of each part. Printing machines are broadly classified as letterpress, lithographic, and intaglio depending on the type of plate, and as flat-press, cylindrical, and rotary depending on the shape of the plate and the pressure method. Printing paper comes in flat and reel form, and the paper feeding method can be automatic or manual. Lithographic offset printing is currently the most popular. However, printing equipment that does not require printing pressure, such as electrostatic printing and inkjet printing, has also become common with the spread of electronic copiers and personal computers.
