The invention of movable type printing by Gutenberg in the mid-15th century heralded the beginning of typography culture in Europe. Printers appeared on the stage of history as the bearers of a new culture that symbolized the modern era. Of the new technologies that revolutionized book production, the press and paper were already known, so the key innovation was the casting of metal type. For this reason, many of the early printers, including Gutenberg himself, were former metal engravers, and because they used fire and metal, they were sometimes considered to be sorcerers and heretics.

15世紀中葉のグーテンベルクによる活版印刷術の発明は，ヨーロッパにおける活字文化の開幕を告げるものであった。印刷工は，まさにこの近代を象徴する新しい文化の担い手として，歴史の舞台に登場する。書物の生産に大変革をもたらした新技術のうち，プレス機と紙はすでに知られていたから，革新のかなめは金属活字の鋳造であった。それゆえ，グーテンベルクその人をはじめとして，初期の印刷工には彫金師から転身した者が多く，火と金属を用いるところから，呪術師と目され異端視されたりもした。
