A measuring instrument that uses the distance between end faces as a fixed length standard. It is a measurement that embodies the length dimension in a rod-shaped object. There are three types of end faces: flat, cylindrical, and spherical. The types include: (1) parallel end standards with flat end faces and rectangular or circular cross sections; (2) disc gauges and cylindrical plug gauges with completely cylindrical measuring surfaces; (3) cylindrical end bar gauges and flat plug gauges with measuring surfaces that are part of the same cylinder; and (4) spherical bar gauges with measuring surfaces that belong to the same sphere and have a circular cross section. Block gauges, which are used as a standard for length, are a typical example of parallel end standards. End standards are generally made of tool steel, but special steels, cemented carbide, glass, and quartz are also used depending on the application.
