A sumo term. In the Muromachi period, a person who defeated an opponent in sumo was said to have "taken a seki." Seki means a checkpoint or barrier, and taking and defending a barrier signifies a strong person, and the title came to be used as an honorific, either "seki" or "sekitori." In the mid-Edo period, professional sumo began to flourish, and during the Genroku period (1688-1704), a ranking system was compiled to show the strength of wrestlers, with the character "dai" placed above the seki, and ozeki was placed at the highest rank, and sekitori became a general term for high-ranking wrestlers. From the Edo period to the early Meiji period, the highest rank was ozeki, and the character "yokozuna" was not added to the sumo ranking system until the May tournament of 1890 (Meiji 23).
