A steep mountain range that makes up the southern part of the Hokkaido mountain range. It stretches for over 150 km, from Mount Sahoro (1,059 m) in the north to Cape Erimo in the south. The main watershed leans eastward, and the eastern side of the range slopes steeply into the Tokachi Plain, creating a vast, high-altitude alluvial fan where it meets the plain, creating a magnificent landscape. The western side is gently sloping, with some areas stepping out into terraces on the Pacific coast, giving a sense of the depth of the range. The range is made up of a series of mountain ridges, ranging from 2,000 to 1,500 m, including the main peak Mount Poroshiri (2,052 m), and many of them have cirques (cirques) near the summits caused by glacial erosion. In particular, the cirque of Mt. Totsutabetsu (1,959 meters) has two moraines, indicating that the Hidaka Mountains have had two glacial periods. In the central axis, the Hidaka Metamorphic Belt, consisting of hybrid rocks, metamorphic rocks, and plutonic rocks, runs along the mountain ridge, and to the west of that is the Cretaceous layer, known as the Hidaka Group. This was uplifted and metamorphosed to form the Hidaka Group. The Hidaka Mountains are a major obstacle to east-west transportation in Hokkaido, but in addition to the ancient Karikachi Pass (644 meters), Nissho Pass (1,023 meters) has been used since World War II, and three national highways have been opened, including one via Cape Erimo in the south, and the JR Nemuro Main Line and Sekisho Line are linked by the Shin-Karikachi Tunnel. Climbing is not often done by anyone other than experts, but part of the mountain has been designated as the Hidaka Mountains Erimo Quasi-National Park. [Ichiro Kashimura] The main peak of the Hidaka Mountains (2052m above sea level). Cirques can be seen on the east and north sides of the summit. The mountain's name, Poroshiri, means "big mountain" in Ainu. The photo was taken from the northeast, and the Nanatsunuma Cirque spreads out below the ridge.
