As mentioned above, involute gears are currently the most widely used, and one of the reasons for this is that the use of a method called profile shifting allows the same tool to cut out a variety of tooth profiles. Ordinary involute gears are cut so that the center line of the rack cutter (reference pitch line) is tangent to the pitch circle of the gear to be cut, as shown in Figure 8-a, and gears made in this way are called standard gears. In contrast, a profile shifted gear is one in which the position of the rack cutter is moved in the radial direction of the gear to be cut (this is called profile shifting), and a straight line a certain distance away from the center line of the rack cutter is set as the pitch line, and the pitch circle of the gear to be cut is cut so that it is tangent to this pitch line, as shown in Figure 8-b.

　前述したようにインボリュート歯車は現在もっとも多く用いられているが，その理由の一つとして，転位という方法を採用することによって同一の工具で種々の歯形を切り出せることがあげられる。ふつうのインボリュート歯車の歯切りは，図8-aのように，ラックカッターの中心線(基準ピッチ線)が切削されるべき歯車のピッチ円に接するようにして行われ，このようにして作られる歯車は標準歯車と呼ばれる。これに対して図8-bのようにラックカッターの位置を被切削歯車の半径方向に動かし(これを転位という)，ラックカッターの中心線からある距離だけ離れた一つの直線をピッチ線として，被切削歯車のピッチ円をこのピッチ線に接するようにして歯切りしたものを転位歯車という。…
