A village in Takaoka County, central Kochi Prefecture. Population 6,105 (1995). Located on the south bank of the midstream Niyodo River, it borders Tosa City to the south. The northern and southern parts are covered by limestone mountains, and the Kusaka River, which flows east through the center, joins the Niyodo River at the eastern end of the village. The Kusaka River basin is low and humid, and although rice is grown, vegetable, mandarin orange, and tea cultivation in the fields and livestock farming are thriving. In the valley behind Shimobun are the ruins of Kuzukake Castle, which belonged to the Sannomiya clan, who were the feudal lords of Kusaka during the Sengoku period. Omura Shrine is an ancient shrine that was considered the second shrine of Tosa, and the gilt bronze ring-headed sword (national treasure), which is the object of worship, is said to date back to the late Kofun period.
