A village in Iishi County, southeastern Shimane Prefecture. Population 2,668 (1995). A mountain village in the Chugoku Mountains, with the Fukano River, a tributary of the Hii River, and the Yoshida River, a tributary of the Mitoya River, flowing north. It borders Hiroshima Prefecture to the south, with Mt. Oyorogi (1,218m) on the prefectural border. Yoshida, the central settlement in the middle reaches of the Yoshida River, developed together with the Tanabe family, who operated a tatara ironworks since the Middle Ages, and in the early modern period, the Tanabe family was granted various privileges under the protection of the Matsue Domain. The business closed in 1923 due to pressure from Western iron, but facilities such as the former hut, rice storehouse, charcoal hut, and tenement house have been preserved, centering on the Takadono (a nationally designated important tangible folk material) with a tatara furnace inside.
