A city in the western part of Akita Prefecture, covering the entire Oga Peninsula. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. Funagawa Port on the southern coast of the peninsula, where the city center is developed, is a good natural harbor and the number one fishing port in the prefecture, with a large catch of salmon, trout, flounder, and sandfish. In 1965, the Akita Port area was designated a new industrial city, and industrial development such as oil refining and lumber manufacturing was promoted. There is an oil field in Sarukawa in the north, which produces crude oil and natural gas. The Oga Line runs through the city. Oga Onsen (a weak saline spring containing earth chloride, 51°C) on the northeastern coast is the base of tourism in Oga. Namahage, a New Year's event, is traditionally held here. In March 2005, Wakami Town in Minamiakita County was incorporated. Area: 241.09 km2 . Population: 32,294 (2010). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
