A city in the western part of Oita Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1940. It occupies the Hita Basin and the surrounding mountainous areas, and borders both Fukuoka and Kumamoto prefectures. Kuma and Mameda in the center are both former castle towns, and Mameda was the location of the Saigokusuji District Office from 1686 until the Meiji Restoration. It is a water town along the Mikuma River, and belongs to the Yaba-Hita-Hikosan Quasi-National Park, with many historical sites such as Kan'i-en. The surrounding mountainous areas are one of the leading producers of Japanese cedar (Hita cedar) in the country, and lumber and woodworking industries are thriving. Sarayama at the northern end is known for Onta ware. The Kyudai Main Line and the Oita Expressway pass through the city, and Yoake in the western part of the city is a junction for the Hitahikosan Line. In March 2005, the Hita District villages of Oyama Town, Amanase Town, Maetsue Village, Nakatsue Village, and Kamitsue Village were incorporated.
