Another name for Do Bamar As Yi Ayoung (We the Burmese Association), which was formed to advocate complete independence for Burma (now Myanmar). The name Thakin came from the belief that in Burma, the Burmese were the masters (thakin), and members called each other by their personal names. The group was formed in June 1930, when Burmese was under British rule, by young intellectuals including Thakin Bataung, and began to actively engage in political activism around 1935. With the "Great Riot" of 1938, led by oil field workers, the group became a major political force, organizing farmers and workers as well. Later, a part of the group (the headquarters faction) joined forces with the Sin Ye Tha (proletarian) Party to form the "Freedom Bloc," and in 1944 the party as a whole was dissolved and evolved into the AFPFL (Anti-Fascist People's Freedom League).
