A feast - Okyomori

Japanese: お饗盛り - おきょうもり

Kyo means hospitality with food and drink, and is an offering, a sacred food. Okyomori means cooking, preparing and arranging the sacred food. Because it is a sacred act, a fresh, pure fire is used for cooking the matured food. The fire is usually specially started with a primitive fire starter, a hikiri pestle and a hikiri mortar. The place where the food is prepared is also a specially designated pure space. At large shrines, it is a special building called a sacred food hall or hetsutsuden, and at the guardian deity of a town or village, the house of the head shrine of the shrine, the priest, or the shrine guardian is considered a pure area, and in strict places, no one other than those involved in the preparation of the food is allowed near.

饗はもてなす酒食のことで，供物，神饌である。お饗盛りはその神饌を調理･調製し，盛り付けることである。それは聖なる行為であるため，熟饌の煮炊きの火も，新鮮な清らかな火が用いられる。その火は原初的な発火具である火鑽（ひきり）杵･火鑽臼によって特別におこされるのが普通である。調製する場所も特別に設けられた清浄な空間で，大社では神饌殿あるいは竈殿（へつついでん）と呼ばれる特別の建物で，町や村の氏神では宮座の頭屋や神主･宮守などの家を浄域とし，厳格なところでは調製の役以外の者はいっさい寄せつけない。
