The act of loading and transporting cargo in boxes of a certain size called containers. Containers were invented in the United States at the end of the 19th century, and began to be used for rail freight transport in Europe and the United States around 1920. In international maritime transport today, three types of containers are widely used as international standard containers: 8 feet wide, 8 feet long, and 20 feet, 30 feet, or 40 feet long (1 foot is approximately 30.5 cm). For domestic transport, JR's 5-ton containers and 10-ton containers privately owned by truck transport companies and shippers are used. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
