Roman politician and chronicler of the 2nd century BC. Dates of birth and death unknown. As a tribune in 149 BC, he enacted the Anti-Usury Law, and served as consul in 133 BC and censor in 120 BC. His seven volumes of the Annals of Rome cover the history of Rome from its origins to his time in 146 BC, written in a simple style that includes rational interpretations of tradition and contrasts between ancient virtues and modern vices. He was praised by Cicero and Livy, but only fragments remain. [Hidemura Kinji] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
