A noble family that ruled Milan and northern Italy from the end of the 13th century to the mid-15th century. Its origins date back to the 10th century, when it was a vassal who received a fief from the archbishop. In the mid-12th century, it obtained the title of "vis-conte", which became hereditary and was adopted as the family name. In the first half of the 13th century, it achieved power and honor on a par with that of the archbishop, and the family's viper coat of arms was a replica of the snake on the Church of Sant'Ambrogio. Umberto Visconti (died 1248) laid the foundations for the family's later development. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
