A secret defensive alliance between Germany, Austria, and Italy from 1882 to 1915. Along with the Triple Entente, Britain, France, and Russia, it was one of the camps in the international imperialist conflict in Europe that led to World War I. The direct motivation for the formation of the Triple Entente was France's occupation of Tunisia in April 1881, which drew Italy closer to Austria and Germany. Germany, fearing the rapprochement between Italy and France, persuaded Austria to conclude an alliance treaty the following year. However, due to conflicts of interest with Austria over territory, Italy approached the Triple Entente from 1902 onwards, concluded a mutual neutrality pact with France, and declared neutrality when World War I broke out. In April 1915, based on the Secret Agreement of London, Italy declared the abolition of the treaty on May 3, and the Triple Entente was dissolved.
