…In the Edo period, these inns were used to accommodate those who traveled to the capital for lawsuits or trials. They were also called "kujijin-yado" (official officials' inns). The inns' owners and subordinates were officially authorized to assist in litigation and played a role similar to that of professional lawyers. The official name of the inns in Edo was "Edo-yado" (official officials' inns). The three associations of Bakuro-cho Kodenmacho-gumi Riyojin-yado, Hachiju-ni-ken-gumi Farmers' inns, and Sanju-ken-gumi Farmers' inns formed a stock association.
