A British news agency. One of the four major news agencies in the world. Founded in 1851 by German-born Paul Reuter (1816-1899). It was the largest news agency in the world until the rise of AP and UPI. In 1941, it became a trust organization with members such as the British Newspaper Publishers Association and PA Press Agency, and became a cooperative organization for British newspapers. After its shares were listed to the public in 1984, it expanded its business by acquiring news agencies one after another. PA Press Agency is responsible for distributing news to domestic local newspapers and collecting domestic news for overseas markets. It has also responded quickly to digitalization, and its traditionally strong financial and economic information is distributed in real time to financial institutions and media in 157 countries around the world in 22 languages. In 2008, it was acquired by Canadian information service company Thomson to form Thomson Reuters, which became the largest financial information service provider, surpassing Bloomberg in the United States. The news department continues to use the Reuters brand.

英国の通信社。世界４大通信社の一つ。1851年ドイツ生まれのロイターPaul Reuter〔1816-1899〕が創立。AP，UPIが興るまでは世界最大の通信社。1941年英国新聞社主協会，PA通信社などを構成員とするトラスト組織になり，英国各新聞社の協同機関となった。1984年に株式を一般公開後，つぎつぎと通信社を買収し事業を拡大。国内地方紙への配信と海外向け国内ニュースの収集はPA通信社が担当。デジタル化への対応も早く，伝統的に強い金融・経済情報は世界157ヵ国の金融機関やメディアへ22ヵ国語でリアルタイムに流している。2008年カナダの情報サービス会社トムソンが買収してトムソン・ロイターが発足，米国ブルームバーグを抜いて金融情報サービスの最大手となる。報道部門は引き継ぎロイターブランドを使用している。
