Year of death: August 17, 1917 Year of birth: January 25, 1870 (February 25, 1870) Art critic and art historian of the Meiji and Taisho periods. His pen names were Imoarai and Kandō. He was the eldest son of Iwamura Takatoshi. Born in Tokyo. In 1888, he dropped out of Tokyo Eiwa School and went to America, and in 1891 he moved to Paris where he studied painting at the Academie Julian and also studied Western art history. In Paris, he met Kuroda Seiki. He returned to Japan the following year and became a council member of the Meiji Art Association, but left in 1904 and formed the Hakuba-kai with Kuroda and others. He lectured on Western art history at Tokyo School of Fine Arts (Tokyo University of the Arts) from 1901, becoming a professor the following year. He served as a judge for the Bunten exhibition and was instrumental in the founding of the Kokumin Bijutsu Kyokai (National Art Association).
