A 14th-century Roman civic politician and leader of the popular movement. Born the son of a commoner, he studied Latin as a notary. Fascinated by the cultural artifacts of ancient Rome, he dreamed of restoring that glory. After the Papacy was moved to Avignon in 1309, Rome was in turmoil amidst conflicts between the city's nobles and was in economic decline. From this arose a popular movement for autonomy, and Colla linked this with the hope of a revival of ancient Rome, becoming a leader in the reform of the city government. When Pope Clement IV ascended to the throne in 1343, he traveled to Avignon on behalf of the citizens to appeal for the return of the Papacy to Rome and to ask for support in the reform of the city government.

14世紀ローマの市民政治家，民衆運動の指導者。庶民の子として生まれ，公証人としてラテン語を学んだ。古代ローマの文物に魅せられ，その栄光の再現を夢想した。教皇庁のアビニョン移転(1309)後のローマは，都市貴族の抗争の中で混乱し，経済的にも衰退していた。この中から民衆的な自治獲得の運動が生まれてくるが，コラはこれに古代ローマの再興の期待を結びつけ，市政改革の指導者となった。1343年教皇クレメンス4世が即位したとき，市民を代表してアビニョンへ赴き，教皇庁のローマ帰還を訴え，市政改革の支援を求めた。
