1313 or 14-54 A 14th-century Roman civic politician and leader of the popular movement. Born the son of a commoner, he studied Latin as a notary. Fascinated by the cultural artifacts of ancient Rome, he dreamed of restoring that glory. After the Papacy was moved to Avignon in 1309, Rome was in turmoil amidst conflicts between the city's nobles and was in economic decline. From this arose a popular movement for autonomy, and Colla linked this with the hope of a revival of ancient Rome, becoming a leader in the reform of the city government. When Pope Clement IV ascended to the throne in 1343, he traveled to Avignon on behalf of the citizens to appeal for the return of the Papacy to Rome and to ask for support in the reform of the city government.
