The capital of Tucumán province in northwestern Argentina. Its official name is San Miguel de Tucumán. The metropolitan population is 523,823 (2001). It is the political, commercial, industrial and cultural center of northwestern Argentina. The hinterland, with its subtropical climate and moderate rainfall, is a major sugar cane growing region, and Tucumán province is the largest sugar cane, refined sugar and alcohol producing region in the country. The city is a distribution center for sugar cane, fruits, grains and refined sugar. In 1983, the country's first alcohol fuel production and practical use began. It was built in 1565 during the early colonial period and moved to its current location in 1685. It prospered through trade with the Potosi silver mine region in the 16th and 17th centuries, but was left behind by the country's subsequent development centered on the Pampas region. There are many colonial-style buildings in the city, including the History Museum and the University of Tucumán.
