Chronicles of the East China Sea Region

Japanese: 海東諸国紀 - かいとうしょこくき

This book was created in 1471 by Shin Sukju of the Yi Dynasty of Korea at the command of Emperor Seongjong. It is a one-volume book in type. It consists of the Nihonkokuki and Ryukyukokuki, which contain the history, geography, and customs of Japan and Ryukyu, as well as a list of envoys sent mainly to Western Japan, and the Chohei Ojoki, which records the regulations for diplomatic relations between the envoys. There are ten illustrations (nine pictures), and the three illustrations of Sanpo, which were added in 1474, are particularly valuable as historical documents. The ideological basis for the creation of this book is thought to be the Korean consciousness of Sinocentrism, but the date of creation and the source materials are clear, and it contains the regulations for diplomatic relations that were in effect at the time, making it a highly reliable historical document.

朝鮮，李朝の申叔舟が成宗の命により1471年作成した書。活字，1巻本。日本･琉球の歴史･地理･風俗および西日本を中心とした使節派遣者の一覧を含む〈日本国紀〉〈琉球国紀〉と使節の通交規定を記した〈朝聘応接紀〉よりなる。図は10枚(9図)あり，74年に加えられた三浦（さんぽ）の図3枚はとくに史料的価値が高い。本書の作成された思想的基盤は朝鮮の華夷意識によるものと考えられるが，作成年代･典拠資料が明らかであり，当時施行されていた通交規定が載せられているなど史料としての信頼度は高い。
