Pistachio (English spelling) Pistacia vera; pistachio

Japanese: ピスタシオ(英語表記)Pistacia vera; pistachio
Pistachio (English spelling) Pistacia vera; pistachio
A deciduous tree of the Anacardiaceae family. It is cultivated for its edible nuts. It is said to have originated in Iran, but is now cultivated from Afghanistan to the Mediterranean region. It grows to a height of about 9m, with large pinnate compound leaves and several pairs of leathery leaflets. It is dioecious, and produces small flowers that grow in clusters. The fruit is an ellipsoid 1.5-2cm long, ripens white, and contains a green kernel. The seeds inside the kernel are known as pistachios, and are used raw or as a high-quality nut in confectionery. The Chinese pistachio ( P. chinensis ), famous for its neatly shaped leaves, is also a member of the same genus, but is not edible.
