Hijudai

This plateau occupies the southeastern part of the Yabakei Lava Plateau in central Oita Prefecture. It straddles Kusu Town in Kusu District and the Yufuin District in Yufu City. It is 700-800 meters above sea level, 8 kilometers east to west, and 4 kilometers north to south. The broad, largely undissected grassland has been used as a training ground by the Japanese Army since 1901 (Meiji 34), and by the US Army in Japan after World War II, and then the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. Farmers forced to live on the outskirts of the training ground take to paddy cultivation in the dendritic lowlands in their spare time, and there are prefecture-run forests in the surrounding mountainous areas.

大分県中央部、耶馬渓溶岩台地(やばけいようがんだいち)の南東部を占める台地。玖珠(くす)郡玖珠町と由布市(ゆふし)湯布院(ゆふいん)地区にまたがる。標高700～800メートル、東西8キロメートル、南北4キロメートル。あまり開析を受けていない広い草原は、1901年（明治34）以来陸軍、第二次世界大戦後は在日米軍、ついで陸上自衛隊の演習地として利用されてきている。演習地周縁に追われた農民は演習の合間に樹枝状低地の水田耕作に従い、周縁山地には県営林がある。
