Iwata [city] - Iwata
A city located on the Iwatahara Plateau in the southwest of Shizuoka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1948. It was once the capital of Totomi Province, and during the Edo Period the city developed around Mitsuke, a post town on the Tokaido, and Nakaizumi, where a jin'ya (camp villa) was located. The city is served by the Tokaido Line, Tomei Expressway, and National Route 1. In addition to the collection and processing of agricultural produce such as tea, greenhouse melons, and greenhouse vegetables grown on the plateau, and the manufacture of agricultural machinery, large companies in the automobile, bearing, and musical instrument industries have formed industrial complexes, which have generated a manufacturing shipment value of 1.7537 trillion yen (2003), ranking second in the prefecture. There are many historical sites, including the ruins of Kokubunji Temple (a special historic site) and Choshizuka Kofun (a historic site). In April 2005, the towns of Fukuda, Tatsuyo, Toyoda, and Toyooka in Iwata County were incorporated. The area is 163.45 km2 . Population: 168,625 (2010).

静岡県南西部,磐田原台地上の市。1948年市制。古く遠江(とおとうみ)国府が置かれ,江戸時代は東海道の宿場町であった見付と,陣屋があった中泉に市街が発達。東海道線,東名高速道路,国道1号線が通じる。台地に産する茶,温室メロン,施設野菜などの農産物の集散・加工,農機具製造のほか,自動車,ベアリング,楽器などの大企業が工業団地を形成して,1兆7537億円(2003)の製造品出荷額を上げ,県内2位を占める。国分寺跡(特別史跡),銚子塚古墳(史跡)など史跡が多い。2005年4月磐田郡福田町,竜洋町,豊田町,豊岡村を編入。163.45km2。16万8625人(2010)。
