Around 850-899
King of East Franks. Reigned 887-899. Son of Karlmann (c. 830-880), the East Frankish king of Bavaria. In 880, he was unable to take the throne due to illegitimacy, and only managed to secure Carinthia. In 887, he deposed his uncle Charles III and became king of East Franks. He defeated the Normans and Moravians, and gained suzerainty over the other Frankish kingdoms that had abandoned Carolingian rule after the fall of Charles III. He became emperor in 896 and tried to restore Frankish rule, but was unable to prevent the kingdoms from breaking apart.

東フランク王。在位887‐899年。東フランクのバイエルン分国王カールマンKarlmann(830ころ‐880)の子。880年，庶出のため王位を継げず，ケルンテンを確保するにとどまったが，887年叔父カール3世を廃して東フランク王となる。ノルマン人やモラビア人を破る一方，カール3世失脚後カロリング家の支配を離れた他のフランク諸王国に対し宗主権を得，896年帝位につくなどフランク再建に努力したが，諸王国の分離を防ぎえなかった。
