Benten Island

Japanese: 弁天島 - べんてんじま
Benten Island
A general term for an area consisting of seven large and small islands located in the southwest of Shizuoka Prefecture, in the southern part of Lake Hamana. Most of the islands belong to Nishi-ku, Hamamatsu City, with only Shinbentenjima on the west side belonging to Kosai City. During the Edo period, it was an uninhabited sandbar, and was called Bentenjima because of the presence of a shrine to Benten. It is a good place for swimming, clamming, fishing, and is also home to a fisheries research station and a prefectural aquarium. Bentenjima hot springs, which began flowing in 1960, are famous as a health resort. In 1973, a road approximately 7 km long was opened, linking the area to the Murakushi Peninsula, Tateyamadera, and other areas. It belongs to Lake Hamana Prefectural Natural Park.
