A theory within Vedanta philosophy, the mainstream of Indian philosophy. In Sanskrit it is called viśiṣṭādvaita. It is also translated as qualified ad-dualism. It was asserted by Ramanuja (1017-1137), who established a philosophical basis for the popular Narayana worship that emphasized bhakti (devotion) through Vedanta philosophy, in which he severely criticized Shankara's ad-dualism. Since the individual self (atman) is the body or aspect of Brahman, the individual self regards Brahman as its true nature. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
