A port city facing the Pacific Ocean in northern Ecuador, in northwestern South America. It is the capital of Esmeraldas Province. It has a population of 95,630 (2001). Tobacco, cacao, and bananas are produced in the area, and it developed as an export port for bananas and balsa wood. Recently, oil extraction has started in the Ecuadorian Amazon, a pipeline has been laid across the Andes Mountains to this point, and with the establishment of an oil refinery (built by a Japanese company), oil exports have also started. There are many black people, but they are the descendants of people who came from the direction of Panama as gold mining workers. The city has a strange landscape of widely spread slums of floating settlements. [Shozo Yamamoto] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
