Esmeraldas - Esmeraldas (English spelling)

A port city facing the Pacific Ocean in northern Ecuador, in northwestern South America. It is the capital of Esmeraldas Province. It has a population of 95,630 (2001). Tobacco, cacao, and bananas are produced in the area, and it developed as an export port for bananas and balsa wood. Recently, oil extraction has started in the Ecuadorian Amazon, a pipeline has been laid across the Andes Mountains to this point, and with the establishment of an oil refinery (built by a Japanese company), oil exports have also started. There are many black people, but they are the descendants of people who came from the direction of Panama as gold mining workers. The city has a strange landscape of widely spread slums of floating settlements.

南アメリカ北西部、エクアドル北部の太平洋に面する港市。エスメラルダス州の州都。人口9万5630（2001）。付近でタバコ、カカオ、バナナを産し、バナナ、バルサ材の輸出港として発達した。最近、エクアドル・アマゾンで石油の採掘が始まり、パイプラインがアンデス山脈を越えてここまで敷設され、製油所の設立（日本の企業が建設した）とともに、石油の輸出も開始された。黒人が多いが、彼らは砂金採取労働者としてパナマ方面からきた人々の子孫である。市内には、水上集落のスラムが広く展開する異様な景観がみられる。
