The mausoleum of Imam Reza, the eighth Imam of the Twelver sect of Islam, is located in Mashhad, Iran. Imam Reza, who is said to have been poisoned by the Abbasid Caliph Mamun in 818, was buried in Mashhad (meaning place of martyrdom), and the religious city of Mashhad developed around his mausoleum. It is the largest holy site in Iran, and pilgrimages to the mausoleum are highly valued. The foundations of the current magnificent mausoleum were built during the Safavid dynasty, when Shiite Islam was made the state religion.
