An animal of the order Artiodactyla, family Camelidae. It is a domestic animal kept in the Andean mountain ranges of Chile, Peru, and Bolivia in South America. Its original wild species is thought to have become extinct. Its body shape is similar to that of a llama, but it is slightly smaller, with a body length of about 2 meters and shoulder height of about 90 centimeters. It is thought to have been domesticated in the 4th to 3rd centuries BC, and its main purpose is thought to be for its wool. In fact, alpacas have very soft and good quality wool, with hair that is 10 to 12 centimeters long and can reach up to 40 centimeters in some places. Even at the end of the 20th century, 2 million alpacas were kept in Peru and Bolivia, fulfilling the role that sheep play. The wool is used for clothing and carpets, and these products are also called alpaca. The gestation period is 330 days, and one child is born per litter. In Japan, they are kept at Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens in Nagoya and Hirakawa Zoo in Kagoshima (as of 2003).
