Yellow phosphorus (Phosphorus)

Japanese: 黄リン(燐) - おうりん

An allotrope of phosphorus. Pure phosphorus is colorless and is properly called white phosphorus. Usually, some of it changes into red phosphorus, resulting in a pale yellow waxy solid. Melting point 44.1°C, boiling point 280.5°C, specific gravity 1.82. Almost insoluble in water. Soluble in benzene and carbon disulfide. Emits phosphorescence in the dark and spontaneously combusts in air. Used in the manufacture of red phosphorus and phosphorus compounds and as a smoke generator. Highly toxic. Stored in water.

リンの同素体の一つ。純粋なものは無色で，正しくは白リンという。通常のものは一部が赤リンに変化して淡黄色蝋状固体。融点44.1℃，沸点280.5℃，比重1.82。水にほとんど不溶。ベンゼン，二硫化炭素にはよく溶ける。暗所ではリン光を発し，空気中では自然発火する。赤リンおよびリン化合物の製造，発煙剤に用いる。猛毒。水中に貯蔵する。
