An allotrope of phosphorus. Pure phosphorus is colorless and is properly called white phosphorus. Usually, some of it changes into red phosphorus, resulting in a pale yellow waxy solid. Melting point 44.1°C, boiling point 280.5°C, specific gravity 1.82. Almost insoluble in water. Soluble in benzene and carbon disulfide. Emits phosphorescence in the dark and spontaneously combusts in air. Used in the manufacture of red phosphorus and phosphorus compounds and as a smoke generator. Highly toxic.
