Palau is the largest volcanic island in the Palau Islands, located in the western Caroline Islands in the western Pacific Ocean. It is generally low-lying and covered in dense forest. During the Japanese colonial period, it was called Palau Island, and its government office was located on the small island of Koror off the southern coast.
