The breeches (culottes, breeches) were either stuffed to make them puffed up like an onion or fitted around the thighs. In the 17th century, skirt-like breeches called rhingraves, which reached the middle of the upper legs and had ribbon decorations at the waist and hem, were worn over the culottes. During this period, women in Venice began wearing the same culottes as men under their bell-shaped skirts, and the puffy culottes were called "galley slave breeches" because they resembled the breeches worn by galley slaves. …

…16世紀の男子服は胴衣，膝丈の半ズボン，靴下で構成され，半ズボン(キュロット，ブリーチズ)には詰物をしてタマネギ形などに膨らませたり，太股にぴったりさせた形のものなどが用いられた。17世紀にはラングラーブrhingraveと呼ばれるスカート状の，上脚部の半ばくらいの長さで，腰や裾にリボン飾りのついたズボンを，キュロットの上にはいた。この時代にベネチアでは，釣鐘形のスカートの下に，男子と同じキュロットをはいた女性も現れ，膨らんだキュロットは，ガレー船を漕ぐ奴隷のズボンと似ていたので，〈ガレー船の奴隷風ズボン〉とも呼ばれたという。…
