Takehara [city] - Takehara
A city in the southern part of Hiroshima Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1958. Most of the area is mountainous, with flat land along the Kamo River and along the Seto Inland Sea coast. The central city of Takehara developed on the Kamo River alluvial plain. The Kure Line and Sanyo Expressway run through the city. During the Edo period, the salt industry was thriving and the city was known as Takehara Salt. There is a copper smelter, and sake brewing, red brick manufacturing, and shipbuilding are also carried out. Tadanoumi Town in the east has been a good port since ancient times and was also the outer port of the Miyoshi Domain. A thermal power plant is located on reclaimed land off the coast of Nagahama. The townscape, which has remained unchanged since the Edo period and is called Aki's Little Kyoto, is designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings by the national government. The sea area where finless porpoise whales migrate (a natural monument), Okuno Island, and Rai Sanyo's birthplace and former house are located here. 118.23 km2 . 28,644 people (2010).
