Japanese: 大丸[株] - だいまる

A prestigious department store centered in the Kansai region. Founded in 1717 as a kimono shop in Fushimi, Kyoto, it became a limited partnership in 1908 and a joint-stock company in 1920. In addition to stores in Osaka, Kyoto, and Kobe, the Tokyo store opened in 1954. It attracted attention as a Kansai-based department store entering Tokyo. There are 10 stores (directly managed only). The Kobe store was damaged in the Great Hanshin Earthquake, but reopened in 1997. A subsidiary operates supermarkets. The company also expanded overseas, but withdrew from unprofitable stores in Thailand, France, and Hong Kong. In 2003, the largest store in Hokkaido opened in Sapporo. In September 2007, the company merged with Matsuzakaya Holdings to establish the holding company J. Front Retailing.
