Jacobin Club (English name) Club des Jacobins

Jacobin Club (English name) Club des Jacobins
A political association formed by members of the Breton parliament at the time of the Estates General in Versailles in 1789. It was originally called the Breton Club, but after it moved to Paris and established its headquarters at the Jacobin Convent (Dominican Order), it came to be called the Jacobin Club. Its official name was the Society of Friends of the Constitution (since September 1792, the Society of Jacobins, Friends of Liberty and Equality). At first, the main purpose of the association was to hold preliminary discussions on important parliamentary matters, but as other members and private bourgeoisie joined, it became the largest private revolutionary organization in the country, assisting and representing the revolutionary government, especially during the Reign of Terror.
