Cicada - Tanna japonensis

Japanese: ヒグラシ(蜩) - ヒグラシ（英語表記）Tanna japonensis

An insect of the Hemiptera family, Cicadaidae (illustration). A medium-sized cicada commonly found throughout Japan. Males are 32-39 mm long, females 23-28 mm long, and forewings span 78-92 mm. The body is green with black or reddish-brown markings, and the wings are transparent and slightly greenish. There is variation in the markings on the body, ranging from individuals lacking black parts to individuals (mainly found in mountainous areas) that are significantly blackened and have most of their thorax and dorsum covered in black. The male's abdomen develops like a pouch, and the abdominal valves are scaly and separate from each other. The female's abdomen is short, and the ovipositor does not extend beyond the tip of the abdomen.
