Each stratum contains fossils that are unique to it, and can be distinguished from the strata above and below it by the fossils it contains. This was presented as an empirical rule by W. Smith in a book summarizing the results of the Geological Survey of England. It is as important as the law of superposition of strata* as a basic law of stratigraphy.
