A coelenterate (Cnidaria) of the family Acanthozoidae in the class Cubic jellyfish. When touched, this jellyfish is venomous with its nematocysts, causing intense pain and leaving a burn-like sensation at the site of the sting, hence the name "fire jellyfish." In Japan, it can be found from Kyushu to the Seto Inland Sea, but is widely distributed in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. The cap is usually cubic and 5-8 cm tall, but can sometimes grow to as much as 20 cm, and has numerous brown clusters of nematocysts on its surface. Four tentacles emerge from the edge of the cap, which are reddish and can reach lengths of about 20 cm. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
