SMS - SMS

A service that allows short text messages to be sent between mobile phones and smartphones. Short Message Service. No email address is required. If a message is sent to a phone number, it will be automatically received if the recipient's mobile phone is able to receive it. The sender pays the fee. It is popular worldwide because it is cheaper than mobile phone charges. It can send several dozen full-width characters or a hundred or so half-width characters. In Japan, it was not possible to send and receive SMS between mobile phone operators, but this became possible in July 2011. It is called SMS (NTT Docomo, Softbank Mobile, E-Mobile), C-mail (au, but SMS(i) for iPhone), Litemail (Willcom), and other names vary depending on the service provider. SMS from domestic operators other than Willcom also supports international SMS with mobile phone operators in Japan.

As mobile phones become more sophisticated, there are messaging services that have evolved from SMS, such as Enhanced Messaging Service (EMS), which can send decorated text, images, and voice, and Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), which can send color images and videos. Taking advantage of the immediacy and reliability of SMS, there are cases where it is used as an emergency contact network for local governments and companies, and there are also notification services where financial institutions send account transaction information by SMS at any time to strengthen security.

携帯電話やスマートフォンどうしで短い文字メッセージの送受信ができるサービス。ショートメッセージサービスShort Message Serviceの略。メールアドレスは不要で、電話番号を宛先(あてさき)として送信すると、送信先の携帯電話が受信可能な状態であれば、自動的に受信する。料金は送信者側が支払う。携帯電話の電話料金より安くメッセージが送れるため、世界的に普及している。全角文字なら数十文字、半角文字なら百数十文字送信することができる。日本では携帯電話事業者間を越えてSMSを送受信することができなかったが、2011年（平成23）7月より可能になった。呼称はSMS（NTTドコモ、ソフトバンクモバイル、イー・モバイル）のほか、Cメール（au。ただしiPhone(アイフォーン)ではSMS（i））、ライトメール（ウィルコム）など、サービスを提供する事業者により異なるケースがある。なお、ウィルコムを除く国内事業者のSMSは、国外の携帯電話事業者との国際SMSにも対応している。

　携帯電話の高機能化により、文字の装飾、画像、音声の送信ができるEMS（Enhanced Messaging Service）や、カラー画像や動画の送信ができるマルチメディアメッセージングサービスMultimedia Messaging Service（MMS）などのSMSを発展させたメッセージサービスもある。SMSの即時性や確実性を生かし、自治体や企業の緊急連絡網として利用するケースや、金融機関がセキュリティ強化のため、口座の取引情報をSMSで随時送信する通知サービスなども行われている。
