Capa (Portugal) - Capa

Japanese: カパ(ポルトガル) - かぱ
Capa (Portugal) - Capa

…an outer garment worn over clothing to protect against the cold, rain, and snow. The word originates from the Portuguese word capa, which was named after the "sleeveless, wide-legged garment" (from "Shikisou") worn by Portuguese and Spanish people who arrived in Japan in the late 16th century. The rulers of the time, such as Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Ashikaga Yoshiaki, quickly imitated this and had the same type of garment made out of the finest woolen fabric, "shojohi" (reddish purple), which had been presented to them from the West. They called it kah, kahan, or kappa, and kept it around them as a symbol of authority.
