A village in Yoshino District, central eastern Nara Prefecture. Population 3,336 (1995). It borders Mie Prefecture to the east by the mountains of the Daidaka Mountains, including Takamiyama, and the Takami River, a tributary of the Yoshino River, flows west along the Median Tectonic Line, which runs through the center of the prefecture. Settlements are scattered at altitudes of 200 to 700 meters, but there is almost no cultivated land, and the area is covered with beautiful artificial forests of cedar and cypress. Forestry is the main industry, and polished logs are particularly popular. One-fifth of the working population is engaged in forestry, but in recent years there has been an outflow of young workers, and there is a serious labor shortage. The central settlement is Ogawa, formerly called Washikaguchi, and in the early modern period it was a key location on the Ise Kaido road, and is also known as the site of the final battle of the Tenchugumi.
