The degree to which the flat part of a machine part deviates from an exact plane; shape error. Flatness can be expressed either by considering a plane that passes through three points on the flat part of the machine as far apart as possible, and expressing it as the maximum deviation from this (maximum runout flatness), or by expressing it as the maximum inclination from the exact plane (maximum inclination flatness). In addition, where optical reflection can be used, flatness can also be measured or displayed using the radius of curvature of the flat part. There are also optical measurement methods that use interference fringes or an autocollimator. In manufacturing sites, a simple method is also used in which flatness is calculated from the amount of contact by grinding against a reference surface plate.
