A bird of the family Shoebillidae in the order Ciconiiformes. This family consists of only one species, the shoebill. It is about 1.2m long. It is similar in shape and size to storks, but has a large head and an unusually thick beak shaped like a wooden shoe. Its English name is derived from the strange beak and head. Its plumage is slate gray all over its body, with a glossy green tinge on its back. The sexes are the same color, but young birds are mostly brown. It is found in the interior of central Africa, mainly in the upper reaches of the White Nile and in the rarely visited swamps of tropical East Africa.
