A passerine bird of the family Emberizidae. Total length is about 14 cm. It is slightly smaller than a sparrow. At first glance, it appears yellowish, with a greenish-brown back and black stripes, and a more yellow underside. There is a white ring around the eye. The male and female are almost the same color. It breeds in the mountains of Honshu and Hokkaido, and is not known to breed outside of Japan. It is common in areas along the Sea of Japan in central Honshu. In winter, it descends to the plains, and migrates to Kyushu, southeastern China, and the Philippine Islands. It lives in sparse forests, but particularly prefers forest edges and swampy forests near water. It breeds monogamously, and males are very territorial.
