A passerine bird of the family Emberizidae. Total length is about 14 cm. It is slightly smaller than a sparrow. At first glance, it appears yellowish, with a greenish-brown back and black stripes, and a more yellow underside. There is a white ring around the eye. The male and female are almost the same color. It breeds in the mountains of Honshu and Hokkaido, and is not known to breed outside of Japan. It is common in areas along the Sea of ​​Japan in central Honshu. In winter, it descends to the plains, and migrates to Kyushu, southeastern China, and the Philippine Islands. It lives in sparse forests, but particularly prefers forest edges and swampy forests near water. It breeds monogamously, and males are very territorial.

スズメ目ホオジロ科の鳥。全長約14cm。スズメよりやや小さい。一見黄色っぽい鳥で,背面は緑褐色で黒い縞模様があり,下面は黄色みが強い。眼のまわりに白いリングがある。雌雄はほぼ同色。本州の山地と北海道で繁殖し,日本以外では繁殖が知られていない。本州中部の日本海側の地方には多い。冬は平地に降り,九州や中国南東部やフィリピン諸島まで渡る。まばらな林にすむが,とくに水辺の林縁や湿地林を好む。一夫一妻で繁殖し,雄は強いなわばり性を示す。
