A former town in Hita County, western Oita Prefecture. Most of the area is mountainous, with lowlands in the Kusu River basin and open rice fields. Beef cattle are raised, and timber, vegetables, and fruit are produced. The Kyudai Main Line runs along the river, and Amagase Onsen (simple hot spring, 80-100°C) is located near Amagase Station. In March 2005, it was incorporated into Hita City along with Oyama Town, Maetsue Village, Nakatsue Village, and Kamitsue Village in Hita County. 101.83 km2 . 6,686 people (2003).
