Edward Bickersteth

Bishop of the Church of England from 1850 to 1897. Born near London, he graduated from Cambridge University and became a lecturer there, but in 1877 he served as head of the university mission in India. He was ordained as a bishop and came to Japan in 1886, where he played a leading role in resolving issues surrounding the jurisdiction of British and American bishops, establishing a cooperative system between the three missions of the two countries, founding the Anglican Church in Japan in 1887, and establishing its local system. He also achieved the revision of the prayer book. He returned to Japan in 1896 due to illness, and died the following year. [Doi Akio]

1850‐97英国国教会主教。ロンドン近郊に生まれ，ケンブリッジ大学卒業後，同大学講師となるが，1877年より同大学ミッション首長としてインドに伝道。86年主教按手をうけて来日し，英米の主教の管轄権をめぐる諸問題の解決，両国の三つのミッションの協力態勢の確立，87年の日本聖公会の設立，その地方部制の確立に指導的役割を果たし，祈禱書の改訂も実現した。96年病を得て帰国し，翌年死去。【土肥昭夫】
