A mining city in northwest Queensland, in northeastern Australia. Population 24,390 (1981). Home to some of the country's leading non-ferrous metal mines, copper, lead, zinc and silver ores are extracted and primary copper smelting is carried out. It accounts for about 70% of the nation's copper ore production. Mineral products are transported by rail to Townsville, about 1,000 km east. It is also a regional hub in the northwest of the state, with major air and road routes running through it. Ore deposits were discovered in 1923 and the city was incorporated in 1968. The name comes from the sister of the person who discovered the deposits. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
